Metallurgical companies are now facing ambitious challenges set by the EU Green Deal, requiring them to implement measures to reduce CO₂ emissions. Many metallurgical processes, such as charge melting and preheating, are highly energy-intensive. Decarbonizing these processes while maintaining acceptable investment and operational costs presents a significant challenge. In addition to green electrification, which plays a key role in both short-term and long-term strategies, roadmaps to net zero should incorporate immediate measures such as oxy-fuel combustion with conventional fuels, while in the long term, a comprehensive approach will be necessary, integrating low-emission fuels like hydrogen and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCU/S) technologies to achieve sustainable transformation.
