Steel represents about 95 % of the total weight of metals used in the world. It still plays very important role in every field of human life. At the beginning the paper presents important facts about steel production and steel products, which have been made by rolling methods. Then paper describes some examples of innovative and important rolling technologies, including details of roll pass design (RPD). First of them is multiple slitting rolling (MSR), which is widely used for ribbed bars production. The essence of this method is the application of two or three consecutive cutting-in passes, in which deformation of metal considerably differ from those occurring in conventional stretching passes.
Next are presented problems during rolling of long rails for safe and comfort transportation. Rolling process of long rails implies many technical problems connected with handling of long piece of rolled metal. Despite this problems the very high quality of final rails has to be assured and guaranteed. Hereafter, technological challenges during rolling of sheet piles are discussed. Sheet pile, including Z-section ones, belong to greatly demanded rolled products, but the rolling process is highly difficult, mainly due to improper metal flow and very high rolling forces. The role of advanced computer methods applied in the roll pass design is also presented.
At the end of the paper the energy saving and environmental protection in rolling industry is discussed. Some examples of innovative and energy savings rolling technologies are mentioned, like omission of rough operations during rolling chain, near-net-shape casting and rolling, hot charge or direct rolling, and others.
The presentation will explore the application of medium-entropy alloys (MEAs), high-entropy alloys (HEAs), and high-entropy oxides (HEOs) in energy storage, focusing on hydrogen storage and lithium-ion batteries. These materials, characterized by high configurational entropy and unique properties, demonstrate superior hydrogen storage capacities, enhanced cyclic stability, and potential cost reductions for hydrogen storage systems. The alloys exhibit promising performance in hydrogen absorption and desorption, aiming to surpass current industrial benchmarks in volumetric energy density, desorption temperatures, and kinetics. Concurrently, high-entropy oxides are investigated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, leveraging multi-element synergy to enhance performance. The research includes material preparation, experimental testing, and predictive modeling through empirical calculations. The results highlight the transformative potential of these materials in advancing energy storage technologies, from hydrogen-based systems to electrochemical storage solutions.
